“SVA” what!!! Many of you are probably wondering what in the world am I talking about. Many people think it’s the School of Visual Arts but no it is not. This is why I want to inform the world. SVA (Success Via Apprenticeship) program is a five year teaching program students coming out of career and technical high school can enter and become a CTE teacher.

I graduated from Thomas A. Edison H.S which is a vocational and technical high school. I majored in Electronics technology and got to love learning the theory behind electronics and technology. Getting the detailed knowledge in something I wanted to pursue in college I found out about the Success Via Apprenticeship Program. You join the department of education at the age of 18 and get the same benefits and privilege as any other DOE member. One semester you be positioned at a high school to teach the field of your expertise with a mentor in the room at all times. After your semester is over you will be put into a company that deals with your area of specialization so you can receive the field experience side of becoming a CTE teacher for a year and then you go back to another high school for a semester again. While either teaching in the schools or doing service calls in the industries you must be taking college classes at night. The college you will have to attend in order for some of your college credits to be paid for is New York City College of Technology in Brooklyn.

This experience gets tough at times but well worth it in the long run… I urge you students please take advantage of these opportunities but the only way for it to come your way is by setting your mind to doing well and achieve your goals like I did.
